The Animal Disease Diagnostic Center (ADDC)

Missions

The Animal Disease Diagnostic Center (ADDC), College of Veterinary Medicine, National Chung Hsing University was established in 2003 with the purposes to facilitate teaching, research, and extension services of veterinary science; and to provide disease diagnostic services to public and private sectors in animals.

Organization

The Director of the ADDC was initially recommended by the Dean of
the College of Veterinary Medicine and was finally approved by the
President of NCHU. There are five laboratories in the ADDC including
Pathology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Serology, and Animal
Drug and Toxicology. The finance of the ADDC is independent and
supported by studies entrusted by government and companies.

Services provided by ADDC

1. Pathology examination & diagnosis
The main works of this laboratory are to conduct necropsies, histopathological slide preparation
and staining, and pathological diagnosis in animals. The sponsors include food production animal
farms, related research institutes and universities, public customers and others.

The new services of health monitoring and treatment of horses, sheep, and cattle were also entrusted by the
Center of Disease Control (CDC) in 2013, and Cingjing Farm in Nantou County in 2014.

2. Microbiology examination
The main services of this laboratory are to perform microbiological identification, drug sensitivity
tests, and drug residue exams in animals.

3. Molecular biology examination

The main works of this laboratory are to perform the biotechnics of polymerase chain
reaction (PCR) and real-time PCR for bacterial and viral identification in animals.
In addition, screening of potential viral pathogens in semen for the prevention of infection
of boars was entrusted by COA. Such viral pathogens include hog cholera (HC),
pseudorabies (PR), and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS),
which are examined by using PCR methods. It can also be a useful strategy for
biological defense and disease monitoring in Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) farms.
The newly established serological services for dogs and cats have seen steadily increasing
numbers of cases. Advanced molecular biology examination for health monitoring will be
    provided next.

4. Serology examination
The main works of this laboratory are to perform serological examinations for diseases,
including hog cholera (HC), pseudorabies (PR), and porcine reproductive and respiratory
    syndrome (PRRS)

5. Animals Drug and chemical examination

The main works of this laboratory are to perform antibiotic analysis and identification.
In addition, genetic and toxicity tests are performed on laboratory animals for safety
    evaluation of foods and drugs.
